Risks involved with Anaesthesia
Depends on many factors eg type of surgery, health, age of patient etc
For more common reactions:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Blurred vision
- Sore throat
- Muscle pain
- Pain at site of injection
- Temporary nerve damage/numbness
- Damage to teeth, lips or tongue
- Asthmatic reaction
Rare but serious reactions (less than 0.1%):
- Awareness
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Kidney or liver failure
- Permanent nerve damage eg to voice box, paraplegia
- Severe life threatening allergic reaction
- Death
Note: Anaesthesia may affect your judgment so, within 12-24 hours of receiving a general anaesthetic or sedation you must do not:
- Drive a car
- Operate machinery
- Sign any legal document
- Make important decisions
- Drink alcohol
